Aramco Coating Standards

 Common Saudi Aramco Coating Standards

When it comes to Saudi Aramco coating projects they follow standards along with Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards, which is also known as SAES and APCS systems. This is done to make sure that the corrosion protection and coating performance are of quality.

1. SAES-H-001

This is the Saudi Aramco coating specification that covers a lot of things including:
  Coating system selection
   Surface preparation
  Application procedures
   Inspection requirements
  Repair painting
  conditions

This specification is used for things like:

 Structural steel
 Pipelines
   Tanks
   Process equipment
Aramco Coating Standards

2. APCS, which stands for Aramco Protective Coating Systems

APCS defines the approved coating systems for services. For example:
APCS-1 is for service
 APCS-2 is for immersion service
APCS-113 is for external structural steel
APCS-117 is for tank internal lining

APCS includes things like:

 Approved primers
  Intermediate coats
  Topcoats
Required DFT, which's the dry film thickness

3. SSPC-SP10 / NACE No.2

This is a standard for near white metal blast cleaning. It is the commonly required blasting standard in Aramco projects. The requirement is to remove rust, mill scale and contaminants and allow slight staining. The typical anchor profile is 40–75 µm. This standard is used before applying things like epoxy coating, zinc- primer and polyurethane systems.

4. SSPC-SP5

This is a standard for white metal blast cleaning which's the highest level of abrasive blasting cleanliness. It is used for things like corrosion environments, immersion service and tank internals. The requirement is to have a 100% bare metal surface.

5. SSPC-PA2

This is a standard for measuring coating thickness also known as film thickness or DFT. It defines things like gauge calibration, spot measurement and acceptance criteria.
The formula for DFT is:
DFT total = DFT 1. Dft 2 + DFT 3

6. ISO 8501

This is a standard for surface cleanliness. It is a standard for blasted steel surfaces. The common grades are:
Sa 1 which is a blast
Sa 2 which is a blast
Sa 2½, which is a white blast
Sa 3 which is a white metal blast

7. ASTM D4417

This is a standard for measuring surface profile. It is used to measure the anchor pattern after blasting. The methods used are replica tape, needle gauge and comparator.
The concept of surface profile is:
R t = R p. R v

8. NACE SP0188

This is a standard for holiday detection of coatings. It is used for things like tank linings, immersion coatings and pipeline coatings. It detects things like pinholes, voids and discontinuities.
The formula for holiday detector voltage is:
V = 1250 times the root of t

9. ASTM D4541

This is a standard for pull-off adhesion test. It measures the coating adhesion strength to the steel surface. The common tools used are pull-off tester and dolly adhesion tester.

10. ISO 8502

This is a standard for surface contamination tests. It checks for things like dust contamination, chloride contamination and surface salts. This is important to do before coating application.

11. ASTM D4285

This is a standard for air cleanliness test. It is used to verify the air quality during blasting. It checks for things like oil contamination and moisture contamination.

12. ASTM D3276

This is a standard for humidity and dew point. It is used for monitoring before painting. Painting is not allowed when the surface temperature minus the dew point is than 3 degrees Celsius.

Common Aramco Inspection Tests

These tests include:
Surface profile test
Dust test
 Dew point measurement
 WFT inspection
 DFT measurement
 Holiday detection
 Adhesion testing
Cure inspection

Why These Standards Matter

These standards are important because they have benefits, including:
 Preventing coating failure
Improving corrosion protection
Increasing coating lifespan
Reducing maintenance costs
Ensuring project quality compliance
Saudi Aramco coating standards are very important, for Saudi Aramco coating projects. Saudi Aramco coating standards help ensure that the coatings used are of quality and will last a long time. Saudi Aramco coating standards are used to prevent coating failure and improve corrosion protection. Saudi Aramco coating standards are also used to increase coating lifespan and reduce maintenance costs.
