Immersion Zone Coating
Immersion Zone Coating is a protective coating for steel or concrete that is always underwater or in liquid like in seawater tanks, ballast tanks and pipelines.
Sea water intake and outfall pipelines
Ballast tanks
Potable and firewater tanks
Wastewater tanks
Underground steel exposed to groundwater
Internal tank bottoms
Key Requirements for Immersion Zone Coating
The coating needs to be good in these areas because it stays wet all the time:
Excellent water resistance
protection against corrosion
Strong adhesion to blasted steel
Chemical resistance
Abrasion resistance
Long-term durability, under immersion
+ Has water resistance
+ Often used in tanks and submerged steel
+ Typically used for process tanks and aggressive services
+ Often used in offshore splash and immersion areas
+ Used for underground and marine services
Stripe coat: edges and welds
Primer: epoxy
Intermediate: high-build epoxy
Finish: immersion-grade epoxy
Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 300–600+ microns depending on the service.

Common Immersion Zone Coating Systems
1. Pure Epoxy / High-Build Epoxy
+ Most common coating used+ Has water resistance
+ Often used in tanks and submerged steel
2. Phenolic Epoxy
. Offers better chemical and temperature resistance+ Typically used for process tanks and aggressive services
3. Glass Flake Epoxy
+ Provides barrier protection+ Often used in offshore splash and immersion areas
4. Coal Tar Epoxy
. Older systems; less common now+ Used for underground and marine services
5. Epoxy Novolac
+ Heavy-duty chemical immersionExample of an Industrial Immersion Zone Coating System
